About
Dr. John Patterson is a Cardiologist with LewisGale Physicians, serving the New River Valley in Southwest Virginia. He received his medical degree from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine. In addition, Dr. Patterson completed a post-graduate internship and residency in Internal Medicine, as well as fellowships in Cardiovascular Disease and Cardiovascular Intervention, at the Bowman Gray Medical Center at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He also earned his Bachelor of Science in Biology from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Dr. Patterson is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) and has over 20 years of experience specializing in Cardiology, Cardiovascular Disease, and Interventional Cardiology. Prior to joining LewisGale Physicians, he was the Medical Director of the Coronary Interventional Program and a member of the Board of Trustees at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon, Virginia. Dr. Patterson also served on the board of the Mountain States Health Alliance Quality Council, as Co-Medical Director of the Cardiac Cath Lab at Lafayette General Medical Center (Lafayette, Louisiana), Medical Director of the Cardiac Cath Lab and of Cardiac Research at Forsyth Medical Center (Winston-Salem, North Carolina), president of Winston-Salem Cardiology practice, and as a member of the Executive Committee for Winston-Salem Cardiology.
Dr. Patterson enjoys giving back to his community. He has offered his expertise to the American Heart Association® to help develop a cardiac program aimed at raising awareness, diagnosing, and treating cardiac disease in women. In addition, he serves on the Virginia Heart Attack Coalition’s (VHAC) community-based project for managing STEMI (ST-elevation Myocardial Infarction) and has spoken at several conferences in the medical community. Throughout his career, Dr. Patterson has researched the efficacy of many cardiology-related drugs and medical devices.
