    Dr. Shaun Dane Villiers Smithson is a practicing Interventional Cardiologist of Miami-Dade Cardiology Consultants (MICC) since 2016. He is triple board-certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Disease, and Interventional Cardiology.

    He received his Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Vassar College with a minor in Chemistry. He then attended Howard University College of Medicine, where he graduated at the top of his class in 2009. He completed his Internal Medicine residency at the prestigious Houston Methodist Hospital, where he served as Chief Resident. He continued at Houston Methodist Hospital to complete his Cardiovascular Disease training at the world-renowned Houston Methodist Debakey Heart and Vascular Center. There he also served as Chief Cardiology Fellow. He continued his fellowship training in Interventional Cardiology & Structural heart Disease and received many accolades, including Cardiology Fellow of the year.

    Dr. Smithson was the first to perform highly advanced structural heart interventional procedures such as Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) and MitraClip for the MICC group. He continues to specialize in advanced complex procedures and has a large private practice that focuses on preventative cardiology and cardiovascular disease management. Dr. Smithson also serves as an associate professor in the Department of Medicine at Nova Southeastern University of Allopathic Medicine and is the Associate Program Director of the Cardiology Fellowship training program at Aventura Hospital.

    In his free time, Dr. Smithson enjoys improving his Spanish, traveling, running, and playing tennis. He also volunteers with medical students at the University of Miami as part of their barbershop hypertension screening program.

    He is a member of many academic societies, including the American College of Cardiology, the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography & Interventions, the Cardiac Research Foundation, the Caribbean Cardiac Society, and the Association of Black Cardiologists.
    Dr. Smithson remains committed to the South Florida region. He has been a reliable resource for cardiovascular disease expertise for many news outlets and organizations in South Florida.
